A custom web app costs about R 60,000–R 550,000 to build in South Africa in 2026, on the ranges local developers publish, and a SaaS product that serves many client businesses can pass R 1 million. Packaged builds start near R 30,000. Then budget for hosting and a monthly maintenance retainer.
A web app is software people sign in to and work in, through a browser. That makes it a different purchase from a website, and the quotes show it: published South African prices run from under R 30,000 to over R 1 million. This guide sets those ranges side by side, explains what moves a quote within them, and lists what a web app costs to run after launch.
Syniq builds custom web apps in Cape Town, so we have an interest in the answer. Every market figure below comes from a South African developer's own page, named beside it. Our own prices are in a section of their own near the end.
Website or web app: what is the difference?
A website mostly publishes: pages, a blog, a contact form. A web application does work for its users. They sign in, enter and change data, and the system applies your business rules. A client portal, a booking system, a quoting tool and a SaaS product are all web applications.
The difference matters for cost. A web app needs a database, user accounts and permissions, testing of every rule, and security for the data it holds. A marketing site needs none of that, and what a website costs in South Africa covers that end of the market. If you are not sure which you need, web app, website or mobile app sets out the choice.
What a web app costs in South Africa
We found five South African developers that publish web app prices on their own sites. Each defines its tiers differently, so the table keeps each source's own description.
| Source | What it prices | Published range |
|---|---|---|
| Website Pro, Johannesburg | Packaged web apps with sign-in and user roles, a database and an admin dashboard | R 29,900–R 120,000 once-off, VAT included |
| Glenwood Dev Apps, Durban (May 2026) | A custom web platform: portals, dashboards, booking systems, client logins | R 60,000–R 250,000+ |
| Ayabonga Qwabi, an independent South African engineer | A web MVP: sign-in, core workflows and basic admin, in 6–10 weeks | R 90,000–R 220,000 |
| Ayabonga Qwabi | A production web app: user roles, integrations, reporting, separate test and live environments, in 10–18 weeks | R 220,000–R 550,000 |
| Ayabonga Qwabi | A multi-tenant SaaS product: each client's data kept apart, and billing, in 4–9 months | R 550,000–R 1.1 million+ |
| Black Snow Agency, Johannesburg and Cape Town (June 2026) | An enterprise or custom web application | R 150,000–R 1 million+ |
| The Formula Lab, Cape Town | A custom build such as a SaaS platform, a CRM or ERP system, dashboards or subscription billing | From R 245,000 |
These are published estimates and package prices, not quotes. Read together, they say three things:
- A first version with one core workflow costs about R 60,000–R 250,000 from a custom developer. Packaged builds cost less because the package fixes the features in advance.
- A web app a business runs on, with several user roles, integrations and reports, costs about R 150,000–R 550,000.
- A SaaS product that keeps many client businesses' data apart and bills them is priced from R 245,000 in one guide and R 550,000 in another, and can pass R 1 million. Website Pro's packaged Enterprise App, which lists multi-tenant architecture, costs R 120,000.
Only Website Pro says whether its prices include VAT. Ask every supplier, because 15% is a large difference on a six-figure quote. For mobile apps and larger systems, see what custom software costs in South Africa.
What drives web application development cost?
User roles and permissions. Every kind of user, such as staff, managers, clients and administrators, needs its own screens and rules about what it can see and change. Each role adds design and testing.
Integrations. Payments through a gateway such as PayFast, Paystack or Yoco, accounting software, email and SMS, or a partner's API each add build and testing time, and each can change when the other side updates. Our guide to software integration explains the work involved.
Many client businesses on one system. A SaaS product keeps each client's data apart and bills each one. That separation has to be designed in from the start, and it is the main reason the SaaS rows above cost more.
Data migration. Moving records out of spreadsheets or an old system, and cleaning them on the way, is often underestimated.
Security and POPIA. A web app that holds personal information has to protect it, with secure sign-in, access controls and handling that meets the Protection of Personal Information Act. POPIA and business software covers what that means in practice.
Reporting. A few fixed reports are affordable. Dashboards, exports and filters for every user type add up.
How the work is packaged. A package fixes the features in advance, which is why packaged prices sit at the bottom of the table. A custom build is quoted on your scope.
What a web app costs to run
The build is the first bill. These are the running costs to put beside it. The two cloud services are common examples, and the ones Syniq builds on.
| Running cost | Published price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting the app | Vercel Pro: US$20 a month with one developer seat, about R 333 | Each extra developer seat costs US$20 a month. The free Hobby plan is for personal, non-commercial use Prices exclude VAT. |
| Database and sign-in | Supabase Pro: from US$25 a month, about R 416 | The price rises with use above the plan's limits |
| A .co.za domain | R 100–R 180 a year (The Formula Lab) | Renewed every year |
| Maintenance retainer | R 1,000–R 10,000+ a month for website maintenance (Black Snow Agency); R 5,000–R 25,000+ a month for custom builds (The Formula Lab); from R 18,000 a month for MVPs and internal tools (Ayabonga Qwabi) | Each covers different work, so compare response times and what is included |
| Maintenance as a share of the build | 15–20% of the build cost a year (CrazyClicks, Cape Town, for apps) | About R 30,000–R 40,000 a year on a R 200,000 build |
Cloud services like these bill in US dollars, so the rand cost moves with the exchange rate. Some developers fold hosting into a monthly plan instead: Website Pro offers its web app packages with monthly options that include hosting and support. When you compare quotes, check what the monthly fee covers, and check whether each quote includes the domain. Our guide to what maintenance costs after launch explains what the maintenance budget buys.
How we checked these figures. We read every price on the source's own page on 3 October 2026: Website Pro, Glenwood Dev Apps (dated May 2026), Ayabonga Qwabi (an undated 2026 guide), Black Snow Agency (11 June 2026), The Formula Lab (an undated 2026 guide), CrazyClicks (6 August 2026), Vercel and Supabase. US dollar prices are converted at R 16.65, near the rate Trading Economics showed on 2 October 2026; your bank's rate and fees will differ.
How long a web app takes to build
Ayabonga Qwabi's guide puts a web MVP at 6–10 weeks, a production web app at 10–18 weeks and a multi-tenant SaaS product at 4–9 months. Most of the spread comes from scope and from how quickly decisions come back. How long custom software takes to build goes through each phase.
How to keep the cost down
- Start with the smallest version that proves the idea. What an MVP is, and why to start there explains how.
- Write down the must-haves before asking for quotes. A clear software project brief gets you prices you can compare.
- Buy what is standard. If your need is a CRM, invoicing or job tracking, off-the-shelf software costs less than a build. Build only the part that is specific to how you work: build or buy sets out the trade-off.
- Ask for a fixed price against a written scope, so an overrun is the supplier's risk, not yours. Fixed price or time and materials compares the two.
How Syniq prices a web app
We build custom web apps in Cape Town, priced per project, never per hour. There are two ways in, both starting with a free discovery call, and a care retainer for after launch.
| Route | Price | What it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Custom software | One fixed quote after discovery | Web applications your team works in every day, integrations and internal tools |
| Web design: Scale | Quoted after discovery | Web apps with sign-in, databases and APIs, and online shops, with 3 months of priority support |
| Care retainer | From R 3,500/mo | Hosting, security monitoring, backups, content updates and priority support |
Discovery takes 7–14 days of workshops and a technical audit. After it you get one fixed quote for the agreed scope, and a change of scope is quoted in writing before work on it starts. Designing the system takes 3–5 days and the build 4–12 weeks, with a demo every week.
On final payment you own the source code and the design. For custom software there is also a SaaS option: we keep the code and you pay a monthly retainer, quoted per project.
Hosting comes only with the care retainer, from R 3,500/mo. Check whether a quote includes the domain, ours included. Syniq is not VAT-registered, so no VAT is added.
If you only need a marketing site, the Launch package costs R 9,500 and Growth, with up to 10 pages, a CMS and a blog, costs R 15,000. See web design pricing, or see how a custom software project works.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a web app cost in South Africa? South African developers' published 2026 ranges put a custom web app at about R 60,000–R 550,000, depending on scope. A SaaS product that serves many client businesses can pass R 1 million, and packaged builds start near R 30,000. Hosting and maintenance are extra.
What is the difference between a website and a web app? A website mostly publishes pages for people to read. A web app is software people sign in to and work in: they enter and change data, and the system applies your business rules. That needs a database, permissions and security, which is why a web app costs more.
What does a web app cost to run each month? On Vercel Pro and Supabase Pro, hosting and a database start at about R 750 a month before VAT, billed in US dollars. Maintenance retainers published by South African developers run from about R 1,000 to over R 25,000 a month. A .co.za domain costs about R 100–R 180 a year.
How long does it take to build a web app? One South African developer's guide puts a web MVP at 6–10 weeks, a production web app at 10–18 weeks and a multi-tenant SaaS product at 4–9 months. At Syniq, discovery takes 7–14 days, designing the system 3–5 days and the build 4–12 weeks, with a demo every week.
Does Syniq offer custom web application development? Yes. We build custom web apps in Cape Town, priced per project, never per hour. It starts with a free discovery call, and after discovery you get one fixed quote for the agreed scope. On final payment you own the code, or you choose the SaaS option and pay a monthly retainer.
Is it cheaper to build a web app or buy software? For standard needs such as a CRM or invoicing, buying is cheaper. Building pays off when the way you work is specific enough that off-the-shelf software costs more in workarounds than a build would. Many businesses do both: they buy the standard tools and build only the part that is theirs.
